Universities in Malawi play a big role in academic development of the country. In this article you find list of Universities in Malawi including the University of Malawi. Higher education in Malawi is provided by public institution as well as private universities. National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) is the body mandated to regulate and accredit universities in Malawi.

Candidates are eligible to enroll into Colleges and Universities in Malawi programs if they have minimum of Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) for local students and equivalent qualifications for international students.
NCHE is also responsible for selection of students to all four public Universities in Malawi. Apart from academic qualification, students’ enrolment into public institutions is based on district of origin popularly called quota system.
Selection of students to private institutions is based mainly on academic qualification and evidence of ability to pay tuition fees. Private universities in Malawi do not use the quota system.
Most students in public universities in Malawi are facing financial challenges to pay tuition and other expenses. Students who face worst challenges are the ones who are from poor families and have not been given University loans. Many students are now enrolled on non-residential basis due to inadequate infrastructure available in Public University.
The state President is the Chancellor of all Public Universities in Malawi.

1 University of Malawi (UNIMA)
UNIMA is the largest and oldest University in Malawi. It was established in 1964. It has four constituent colleges. The polytechnic in and College of Medicine in Blantyre, Chancellor College in Zomba, and Kamuzu college of Medicine in Lilongwe. It is one of the accredited universities in Malwi by NCHE
2 Mzuzu University (Mzuni). Founded in 1997, is located in Mzuzu City.
3 Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luarnar).
